i will agree with that.  i've watched PC players who posted videos on youtube and i learned so much in terms of flag running.  it's mindboggling how much you learn from just "watching".
you learn speed boosts, jump timing, escape tactics.  a ton of things.

Watch, imitate , and finally (hopefully) master.

There are four players that have taught me the most in this game ... help, Tx, Chris, and penquin.

You learn more playing against them.

If Gravity is a "P" and the Sun is an "H", it makes a FFFFFFF.

playing with or VS people who R better then you.
I've been dueling a lot more l8ly and i can now beat people who had kicked my a.ss 3 weeks ago.
also, dueling pretty much helps you in all modes, so just duel a lot more and don't B afraid to lose.

I wouldn't exactly say that I always play competitively, but I do have a tendency to go and duel people better me, which is a good portion of people.  I try to learn from my mistakes and when I'm not an active player, watch the competitors and see if there's anything they're doing that I've never done.  If I see something of interest, I'll sometimes try to emulate it and in some cases (depending on how it benefits me and how easy it is to do), I'll start doing it regularly.  Any foot skill I actually have is probably from watching or partaking in duels.

Vehicle-wise, I just watch the flag-runners, the top vehicle killers, and whatever, in order to figure out how to improve.  Generally though, I've been working on my team skills more than anything, because I'm not exactly the best communicator.  If I'm in a battle with a flag carrier or one his/ her cohorts, I usually won't say anything until after I die and sometimes, I'll forget to say anything about it, as I'll quickly try and get back at them, because I can be a fairly vengeful person at times.  Actually, being vengeful in general is one of my main weaknesses, as it leads to my stupid suicide runs and most of my bad mistakes.

Another thing, I'm lazy.  If there are no good players in the game, I can get a few flags.  But I don't do it WELL.  I don't put any effort into running a crazy / fast route back, because I don't have to.

The good players, I notice, almost ALWAYS use their moves, regardless of the competition.  It sorta sucks for the newbs in that case, but its how the good players get and stay good.

I think most of us that get better do so because we are competitive and hate getting schooled.

I started back when playing Q2 DM.  I got pretty good at it and thought I was the **** and got bored.  So I tried this weird "Capture the flag" option or add on whatnot and immediately got my a** handed to me.  As we all know, pubs spam with DM holds no candle to strategy and facing folks off one on one.  That sorta pissed me off and it took me a while to figure out that "running straight forward and shooting like mad" wasn't a very good strategy.

I think there's a whole thought process shift from the linear DM based approach to understanding the whole reality of a fluid combat situation.  It's also much hard to play.

Then I got ok at pubs CTF and played some private games and again got tooled.  a lot of "wtf? how did they do that / move so fast/ do that trick / i never knew...".  And then you go look up the move online, or watch a vid, and practice it offline.

Then you start talking real matches with 4 on 4 and real strategy and again its a new thing.

The rocket is my master.

I played a sh*t ton of DM full of good people at the time and that eventually made me better. just keep playing and ask people questions.

Its definately a given to know who the great players are and what they do to become it. Its like if your a great player your friends with a lot of the other great players cause they like to play with competition which results in you playing with great players all the time which in turns makes u way better.

Once u get it down, its there. Getting it down is the problem and getting there is just a step along with many others. Not everybody started out as a noob, anyone that had played past Unreals or FPS's and was any somewhat competetive then they probably started out UT3 not owning everyone but definately showing early signs of being one of the few great players.

Its amazing how far the competition is off in this game, and as long as we continue playing the same way it will only get worse, not better.

A lot of players play this game and leave ASAP. Some that have ambition start to play with the greats and get better and don't mind to loose every freaking time. They will be the ones that get better.

The ones that play their sad little UT3 deathmatches everyday will get better, but only so much. I feel I'm stuck in the game playing the same players all the time, so therefore I'm only going to get better or stay the same.

Even in the PUGs and stuff, its always the same oh group of players and this is why I feel its so hard for a new player to get good these days. Face it, us good players stick together, we might rival each other but we still stick together.

That's how we all got soooo good...
Currently playing MAG nightly with Wopr, we be owning on SVER n the EF CLAN. UT3 got boring, no competition, nothing else to prove, qM got dat **** on lock.

haha, thanks conner

i'm still nowhere near decent by a long shot but playing with better players, grinning and bearing the 10 to 0 duel thrashings and accepting any help thats been offered to me has made me improve.

and if you really want someone to help you with duel i can recommend kali, he's not only a brilliant dueller but a good teacher too

This is gonna sound daft but part of what has made me a better player than when i first started is thinking one step ahead, i.e, guess where the other player is gonna be in a few seconds.  This has proved very effective for me for when i win a lot in dm and also in vctf when im going after the flag carrier.

Another method i use is to just go crazy and keep moving, its obvious but moving bloody quick will make you harder to kill of course, specially from snipers. Smile
all roun nice guy lol.

I'd probably suck at teaching.
RemY had this topic open about teaching people duel a while ago, I think he's too busy lately though to help people.

kbm is probably a bit easier if you bother to get used to it, although your movement might get worse with it
