yea TX like theres no real difference between running, jumping and walking right? After all its using your feet in some way
![]() The point is that language conveys meaning and Americans have deliberately misused terms or phrases either out of ignorance or possibly to make things more attractive. We have words like ball, sphere, globe and orb etc for things that are round and they are used linguistically in different ways to convey different meaning. The "ball" you use is a spheroid and it is used principally as a projectile and our football is using your feet principally to kick an inflated leather ball. If you had never seen a football match and came across American football and football this tells you more precisely the difference in how the game is played. So this is the purpose of language and different but similar words. Imo I think a game with words like spheroid, projectile, catching, running do not promote it in the same way as football. And Bio I take your point about the world series being the pinnacle but its merely a selling point. It should only be applied to a truly global event surely. Its beamed around the world but i'm guessing that the majority of interest/viewers are from N.America (maybe S.America and Japan). Anyway English has a habit of not following its own rules and using the same word in different way. whilst u guys confuse the hell out of us even more with your strollers, diapers, gas and phrases like take out and i'm good, i'm great etc I think I would rather u did because it makes life more interesting. At work I would much prefer to say "you're welcome" or "no problem" than customary English terms which have less affection. So ..anyway thats my nerdy post of the day over its back to Crysis. No harm meant though, its all good sh1t.....have a nice day! |

well its kind of saying that it's the best of the best, the only thing not worldly about it is where the actual world series is being played. |

This has got retarded.... and there aren't even any retards posting in this thread.
@Penguin... sure definitions can change over time but these sports were called what they are because of definitions at the time. Last post for me in here!

Actually its a post that didnt get posted cos of the downtime.
1 I wrote all this cos its just typing no real effort. The thinking is more taxing but like you I think about stuff 2 OK Baseball is Japan, USA and latin America but how is this a world series? Last time I looked we had 192 countries on the planet not 20 something. 3 Ice Hockey isnt exclusive to USA/Canada its popular in EU too - also Russia like you say Anyway the argument here is more about culture. Im not anti USA and i'm not a UK patriot far from it im just passionate about sports and the truth! EDIT: And yea you do you, wrestle and MMA so your above amateur/semi-pro competitor at least. Sport is competition...just like arguments/ words lol.

-Sorry to disappoint but I'm sure the definition of words can change over time. So a football is still a ball. - "the name of the sport depicts the activity, its heritage OR the origin." Says who? Anyways, pertaining to the origin part, I read that basically there was Football in Europe, which restricted the use of hands. Players that didn't like that basically made Rugby Football. (It's actually called Rugby FOOTBALL on Wikipedia) and then Americans wanted to use the sport and alter it so they renamed it American Football to distinguish it from Rugby Football :/ EDIT- I don't even know why I'm posting in here, I don't even f***ing like sports XDDDD

ehh 1 question?? why the fvck would you write all this? i looked at the bullet points and saw mainly 1 problem. most of your baseball players are from latin america some are even from japan, as a matter of fact more and more every year. also hockey is mostly russian and canadian. so as for how global? i'd say it's a decent amount. |

Also BTW You gave a definition of "ball" that appears to be americanised. So since we are talking about the English language then perhaps a quote from the Oxford English Dictionary (10th Edition, 1999) might give a more credible definition as "a solid or hollow sphere (round shape) especially one that is kicked, thrown or hit in a game". Please note there is not use of the word "ovoid" - egg shaped or whatever. Not even spheroid - meaning "sphere-like but not perfectly spherical."
For too long American sport has competed against the rest of the world using the might of your culture and global influence as credibility a to the worth of your sport. Yes you are great at Athletics, Tennis too, Cycling.

Ha I never realised he said that...
United States never does anything because the rest of the world does it.... It does the exact opposite to try and be different. Don't worry I get the whole argument, neither side would ever admit the other is better :) Side note... fav deadmau song? I like strobe a lot atm.

You're totally missing the point. It is called FOOTball worldwide because the 6.5 Billion people that play it use their feet to kick to ball.
Thanks for defining what a ball is though... had no idea!

Doesn't matter it's the same concept, Baseball uses "bases" and bases aren't a part of your body.
Who said you have to use what's in the name? or if it has to be a body part? ;P Also, the definition of a ball.... ball/bôl/ Noun: A solid or hollow sphere or ovoid, esp. one that is kicked, thrown, or hit in a game. a football = an ovoid that is thrown in a game.... so it's a ball. |

^^ exaclty lol...
and in reply to tx's post..... so what if your "football" players would come and destroy our football players.... they would of course... but just cos yours is a more tough sport with bigger/stronger men it doesnt mean that it's "real football"... its just simply not football!!! its not using your feet neither are they using a ball! and i know spanish football is more fancy and they are more exciting to watch as they utilize faster gameplay and are more skillful but they are weak and do cry like a bunch of pansies lol... not like england.... even though u do get the odd few..... drogba for example.... hate him so much! |

You hardly ever see an English footballer dive or feign injury. Sure it happens but whatever. The game takes a lot more skill than any other sport in the world. You can find a million reasons to hate anything if you want... I'll leave you to it.
