...We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

New Update:
As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online. As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects. When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system.

Now Sony faces another attack allegedly this weekend in retaliation for what many consider its poor handling of the previous attack. Chief among the hacker's beef with Sony, it's assumed, is the company's failure to inform Qriocity users of the situation until ten days after the breach. Word of an impending attack comes from CNET that reports it has received an anonymous tip from an "observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by hackers." CNET reports people involved in the alleged attack plan to publicize some or all of the information they get their hands on, including customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses. The source also told CNET that the hackers claim to currently have access to some of Sony's servers. If true, this will be the third attack against Sony's servers in just over a month. Several weeks ago, the "hacktivist" group Anonymous allegedly performed a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Sony's website as punishment for the way the tech company persecuted George "Geohot" Hotz for hacking its PlayStation console. A couple of weeks after that, a (reportedly separate) group of hackers breached Sony's PSN, Qriocity music service, and Sony Online network, and stole approximately 77 million users' data, including encrypted credit card numbers. Though Sony has implied that it believes Anonymous to be associated with the second attack, Anonymous insists that it is not responsible for the breach. Now it seems that Sony should be preparing itself for another hack--this time from scorned PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online network users. Apparently Sony's apologywasn't enough to make up for the fact that the company took over a week to disclose the breach to its customers. Is it just me, or is this whole "fighting fire with fire" thing not working out?

I think they have made some change to PS3 just since last night. I have an app on my ipod called "Raptr" - this app shows your friends list from ps3 and who is on, also can be linked to xbox and steam friends list. Ever since the attack when I try to sign in it says - "PSN username or password incorrect. Click to fix." Now this morning when I try, it says - "Error - A network error occurred. - Error: playstation:503" This is the first time I've seen this message pop up, so optimistically I think they may be putting some of their capabilities slowly back online. I dont know, but I can dream right?

With PSN still down, hackers return Linux to the PlayStation 3
By Ben Kuchera | Last updated: about an hour agoPublished on: about an hour ago
It all began when a young man named George Hotz began to work on the PlayStation 3, trying to gain access to the machine in a way that made Sony uncomfortable. In response, Sony removed the OtherOS functionality of the PlayStation 3 in a mandatory update, and the hacking community was not happy with this decision, resulting in a sort of cold war. PS3 hackers have once again gained the upper hand: Linux has been returned to the PlayStation 3.
There are a few limitations in terms of the models you can use to access this new custom firmware, but now you'll be able to use Linux with the full support of the hardware, without Sony setting up arbitrary barriers. Here are the features supported:
- Into HV integrated OtherOS bootloader loader (compatible with OtherOS bootloader on 3.15)
- OtherOS bootloader is booted directly from HV, no GameOS is involved.
- Process of booting OtherOS bootloader loader is very similar to 3.15 method
- Booting Linux from HDD/USB/BD/Network
- Linux with GameOS rights
- Full access to all HV SS services (Dispatcher Manager) from GameOS or Linux
- Full access to all System Manager services
- Ability to create/modify/remove repository nodes in LPAR 1 (e.g. with ps3dm-utils or ps3hvc-utils).
- This ability gives you much power over the whole system because many layers of PS3 use repository nodes to exchange information.
- Enabled QA mode in Update Manager
- Downgrading without USB dongle or Service Mode
- Ability to deactivate/activate HDD/VFLASH encryption (e.g. with ps3stor-utils)
- Support for ps3-utils. You can flash new OtherOS bootloader from Linux e.g.
Enabling Linux support is not an easy process, and it's certainly not optimized for people who aren't already well-versed in this sort of thing, but it's out, it's freely available, and it improves on the original implementation of the OtherOS functionality.
Sony is still bleeding from its wounds, and this is just twisting the knife in a little deeper. , directed at Sony, sums it up: "My hardware, my rules. I brought back what you took away."
