- Brink -

There are plenty of gamers who prefer single-player over multiplayer. Whether it’s a desire for story and tasks more fulfilling than capturing a flag or difficulty adapting to chaotic deathmatches, there are people who simply don’t know where to start in competitive online games. Brink aims to eliminate this hesitation by offering players a wealth of engaging objectives, a persistent story, and a sturdy set of training wheels.

Our recent hands-on session with Brink blazed past character creation, instead cutting to the core of the competitive multiplayer gameplay. Players start by using the analog stick to easily select a mission from the objective wheel. Objectives range from repairing a crane used to transport a tank into an enemy base to deploying mines used to create shortcuts on the map. Your available missions change depending on what class you select at designated kiosks. Sneaky operatives have more stealth-oriented missions than a trigger-happy soldier, for example. Players can spend experience points earned in battle to change class on the fly, or to purchase items like turrets for more defensive tasks. These goals are split into two types, allowing combatants to engage smaller objectives on their way to the larger task.

In-game objectives work to propel Brink’s story without relying too heavily on cutscenes and heavy dialogue. The battlestage is Ark, a floating utopian city which began with a “green” agenda and devolved into a decayed urban jungle racked with civil war. Ark has been cut off from the rest of civilization and supplies are running short. While the oppressive Security faction strives to retain order in the chaotic world, an upstart Resistance group strives for control. The war-torn world of Brink hosts some very interesting settings, such as a rusty industrial area, labyrinthine seaside docks, and a high profile airport. Players can experience the story of Ark via two distinct campaigns, assuming the role of Security or Resistance.

Whether you choose to take part in the revolution or strive to suppress it, you’ll find yourself working closely with teammates to achieve your goals. Unlike games like MAG which fail to incentivize players to acts as a team, Brink bribes players into aiding teammates with experience points. You can gain XP by grabbing a medic kit, assuming a support role, and assisting your comrades. Brink provides bot-controlled allies and enemies to help online-shy gamers familiarize themselves with the game mechanics and flow before plunging into the oftentimes chaotic cyber world. With this reliable handrail in place only should gamers new to online play should feel more comfortable popping heads online, it could train would-be Rambos to play teammate rather than lone wolf.

Gamer familiar with FPSs will immediately feel comfortable with Brink’s controls. Lobbing grenades, lining up shotgun blasts, and most aspects of the unleashing the game’s artillery feels precise and familiar. Where Brink departs from the FPS formula is with the integration of the intuitive S.M.A.R.T. (smooth movement across random terrain) system. This handy button empowers gunmen to fluidly vault over, slide under, and navigate the game world with the grace of a pro parkour runner. Unlike Mirror’s Edge, which requires strictly-timed button inputs for successful free running, simply holding a shoulder button allows players to take cover, sprint, and climb architecture for position. Pulling off acrobatics with S.M.A.R.T. feels organic most of the time, but clipping geometry in transit will occasionally botch desired trajectory. Depending on whether players create agile, medium, or heavy characters will affect the balance of health vs. nimbleness in obvious ways, so players are encouraged to create multiple custom fighters.

Overall, Brink feels like a solid FPS with the potential to break down walls between single-player gamers and the online elite. The incorporation of unique objectives presents engaging tasks that move the story forward while motivating players to act as a team. The accessible movement system creates a fun experience that adds strategic elements to the otherwise standard gameplay, encouraging players to seek out leverage and other tactical positions. On the surface Brink may look like many other shooters you’ve played, but once you get your hands on it the difference hits like a grenade-launcher blast.

- The Island -

Built in the near-future as part of a contemporary green vision, the Ark was a model for sustainable living. The massive man-made floating city became a home to the scientists and thinkers focused on making the vision a reality, while its wealthy patrons built a recreational paradise.

But soon the threat of a global environmental crisis became real: glaciers melted, sea levels rose, and the very survival of humanity was threatened. Thousands from around the globe fled to the Ark as a last hope. Refugees clung to survival however they could, while the original founders and their descendants struggled to maintain the island.

Now, the Ark has lost contact with what remained of the mainland and exists in total isolation. As the Ark's supposedly renewable resources dwindle, the balance of power threatens to unravel and throw competing social factions into a horrific conflict.

With tensions growing, Security and Resistance forces are locked in a heated battle for control of the Ark. Which side will you choose?

Check back as we reveal the battlefields of the Ark over the coming months.

SHIPYARD

Over the years, the Ark has collected a wide variety of abandoned and disused ships. Those no longer seaworthy are broken up at a floating drydock for spare parts and scrap metal - a scarce and vital resource on the Ark. Odd pieces of a wide variety of old boats and ships are scattered all about - ocean liners, cruise ships, pleasure boats, even a scuttled navy destroyer - held together like a patchwork quilt by a network of platforms and cables.

Over time, the 'yards and hulls have also been taken over by refugee squatters: living space is scarce and they literally have nowhere else to go.

CONTAINER CITY

Originally used as docks and long term storage, the need for "guest" accommodation saw disused shipping containers hastily and sloppily converted into living quarters. With the huge influx of refugees, Container City was born, now a ramshackle slum.

The lack of maintenance, marine corrosion, and pillaging accelerated the aging process. Old rusty containers are piled dangerously high and those that were not strong enough to be stacked and have collapsed completely.

Now thousands of men, women and children live in tight, confined spaces with almost no access to vital resources. Out of this decay, the Resistance was born, and they continue to use the city as a base of operations, hiding amongst the civilian populace.

- SECURITY: PROTECT THE ARK -

Back when the Ark was a floating five star eco-resort and R&D eco-science park, it only needed a small corporate Security team to perform risk management and VIP protection duties. But as the seas rose, and the trickle of refugees to the Ark became a flood, the Ark needed a police force. And then an armed gendarmerie.

Ark Security has now expanded into a heavily armed counter-terrorism force. Most Security personnel have volunteered because they're convinced that for the Ark to survive it must have peaceful order and conserve its remaining resources. And the extra water ration comes in useful too. Resistance provocations have forced Security to clamp down on Guest unrest, which has lead to the Ark teetering on the brink of outright revolt.

- RESISTANCE: FIGHT FOR THE ARK -

When the seas rose and coastal nations fell into panic, boatloads of refugees fought to find the Ark's secret location mid-ocean - only the lucky ones survived the trek. Initially, they were happy to have survived and gratefully accepted the cramped temporary housing, water rationing and dangerous maintenance jobs. But as the years passed, and conditions worsened, the Ark's new "Guests" came to question the status quo.

Are the Ark's Founders really doing all they can to re-establish contact with the outside world? Why are only the Guests on rationed water? If their work keeps the Ark afloat, why are they second class citizens? The Resistance formed from those sick and tired of being the Founders' captive workforce; they want equal water rations for all, and to use the Ark's dwindling resources to reach whatever's left of the World. Growing Guest unrest has led to Security crackdowns, which have brought the Ark to the brink of civil war.

- Features -

Brink is an immersive first-person shooter that blends single-player, co-op, and multiplayer gameplay into one seamless experience, allowing you to develop your character whether playing alone, with your friends, or against others online. You decide the combat role you want to assume in the world of Brink as you fight to save yourself and mankind's last refuge. Brink offers a compelling mix of dynamic battlefields, extensive customization options, and an innovative control system that will keep you coming back for more.

Not Just Another Hero

Brink's advanced player customization offers a near-endless combination of looks for your character - allowing for the appearance of your character to be truly unique. As you progress through the game and acquire more experience, you'll have even more opportunities for customization.

Two Sides to Every Story

Choose to fight through two complete story campaigns as either a member of the Resistance or Security. Experience these campaigns solo, co-operatively, or competively - it's your choice.

Blurring the Lines

Take your unique character online at any time you choose. Brink allows you to seamlessly move between single player, co-op with friends, and intense multiplayer action. Multiplayer takes the story online where you can play with up to seven other people (or AI characters) cooperatively as you take on the opposing faction or with up to 16 players competitively.

Play SMART

Brink uses the familiar shooter controls that you're used to and adds a new feature: the SMART button. When you hold down the SMART button, the game dynamically evaluates where you're trying to get to, and makes it happen. Whether you're a seasoned FPS veteran or someone just getting started, you'll be able to make more intelligent decisions during the fast-paced action with SMART.

Context-Sensitive Goals and Rewards

Objectives, communications, missions, and inventory selection are all dynamically generated based on your role, your condition, your location, your squad-mates, and the overall status of the battle in all gameplay modes. You'll always know exactly where to go, what to do when you get there, and what your reward will be for success.
