C'mon Brits whos watching this sh1t? Britain lacks talent thats why were so desperate to unearth an undiscovered diamond that disappears within 12 months. Its a TV scam no less. Waddya think? If America or anyone else can pick this stuff up then u might be laughing at the dearth in talent the once was the pride and glory of our great nation. Or am i just talking outta my 4rse as usual (if you say i am then remember to explain with a BECAUSE not simply a 1 line comment).

Quick question, do you (not you personally) brits take that show seriously? Like our American Idol, Dancing with the stars, etc... The feeling I get about our Americas Got Talent show is that it's made for poking fun at people, it's nothing but a complete joke.

HAHA JP this show is like my life!!!

I don't take this show seriously, it is just a bit of fun... I prefer watching the r-tards trying to rap and getting all angry when they get told they can't actually rap.

However to answer your question I'd say more people take it seriously than not... people spend their money calling up to vote and in my opinion that signifies that they take it serious!

I'm not sure what the end result is in the US but over here you get to sing in front of the queen at the Royal variety show... so I guess for those taking part its pretty big...

But give me an all singing all dancing r-tard over someone who is pretty good.

We as a nation DO take it pretty seriously. As Dan said you perform in front of the Queen something that is normally reserved in honour of a distinguished career or notable talent. The Royal Variety Performance usd to be the HOTTEST ticket in town I think they're trying to raise the profile again by doing this though.
People phoning in is more a sign of their participation and influence in shaping the outcome the desire most imo. Its a bit like betting on football or horse racing. They are backing their judgement. plus it gives folk something to talk about, a common interest.
There are some pretty dumb folk who dont seem to mind being publically ridiculed for their lack of talent so I guess like USA we wait around for the incredibly bad ones then "its feeding time!" I honestly think Susan Boyle has a scew missing somewhere, her mannerisms dont add up. But i agree its a nice story. we love this sh1t. We're specialists in making the underdog the victor then smashing them into orbit in a very public way. I hope for that reason she doesn't win.

I always thought that the prize of performing in front of the Queen wasn't that big of a deal, sounds like it is. I don't mean to cause insult but is it just a day of performing in front of her then wham bam, thanks you're done.. I don't know what our winners get. Maybe you can inform me to why its important, I wanna learn.

Well I guess given the chance to play a LAN game against the Queen would be an awesome honour... joke...

Nah I think a lot of people have a kinda affection for the queen, not sure how many countries have royalty but we still have it (arguable why we do!) and people like to celebrate it.

Also in the UK its not really just wham bam you're done... I think that once you have done your little performance people like to think they can make a career out of it...

I get the impression its a smaller/easier X-Factor... for people like Susan Boyle who hit every branch of the ugly tree on the way down... and generally in the UK if people like someone there is a market for them to go on and be profitable for a dance studio or record label etc..

Its a funny little island... but we are passionate about stuff, much like the US is.

I like the results of a few of these shows.

-Leona Lewis (my god, I have a serious schoolboy hurt for her)
-Paul Potts
-Carrie Underwood

I like the drama of the stories like Susan Boyle and the guy with the Sax - Jamie something and that Aiden kid that can dance his ass off.

But, there are a ton of complete morons that bring the car crash voyuer aspect to it as well.

I'd say Leona Lewis has... Girls Aloud are pretty big over here...

Also a few people have gone on to star in TV shows... so I guess its all relative to what they wanted from it. Success is only what we imagine it to be ourselves..

Hey man its a supply and demand situation. we export our goods to the most profitable markets just like USA did/does. Doesn't really require a built-in ethical model hence low-brow programmes to low-brow clientel. Were just returning the favour for stuff like "Diffrent Strokes", "Baywatch" - cheap mans pron, "Boston legal" etc haha!

The Queen or head of the Royal Family does have some power but the majority of the true power lies in Parliament - the elected Government (since we're a democracy and the RF are nobles so power was formerly their birth right). The English Civil War between Oliver Cromwell peoples army (Round heads) and the Nobility which included Dukes, Earls and Royal Family (Cavaliers) was the start of democracy in England because Cromwell was victorious so their was a shift of power to the people. Consequently we have The Houses of parliament (Members are elected by the people by voting every 4-5 years) and The House of lords (membership is by peerage which means being born a lord, Earl or having that honour bestowed upon you by Parliament).
After this The Royal Family has vested powers so that Parliament cannot bypass Lords and people. The Queen has to receive the new Prime Minister before he/she can carry out their duties. She can declare the Government non-representational (think thats the term if they continue to act without the consent of the masses) and order it to be removed. This is highly unlikely though. The nearest thing we've had to illegal act of Government recently is sending our troops to Iraq. I'm recalling stuff off the top of my head so best if you wiki it. Like you suggest though ROLLTIDE is largely for show - puppetry power.

In theory yes... she is meant to control everything.

In practise.. well she is about as much use as a chocolate teapot, an ever increasing drain on tax payers money.

Dan for the first time since the football thread we're gonna disagree. We are a democracy so anyone who is in control has to be elected by the people of the nation. The Queen represents the old establishment, our traditions of bygone days. As part of the settlement after the English Civil War they remained in a position of power so that the will of the people could always be served ie Parliament could not act against the majority. Since the Government are elected by majority of seats they win, then they arguably have the will of the people so are acting with their consent. But largely unpopular decisions/laws might invoke the Queen to act in theory.
I agree though the Queens token power though meant to be there as a balance of power is NOT democratic and is "about as much use as a chocolate teapot". The Queen and English heritage is cool with me but not the hangers on who leech our taxes. How much wealth/interest does she generate for britain? I think its more than we allow her but ask our US and Canadian cousins. In Europe I think she is less loved mostly cos  they've done away with their own inherited royal families.
