ExtraLife

Hey everyone what up?  While listening to one of the multitude of podcasts that I listen to, I heard about this thing called ExtraLife. ExtraLife is a 24-hour gaming marathon to fund pediatric cancer research and treatment. I thought that it would be a really cool idea for us all to come together as a community and to form an ExtraLife iAM team to help raise money for this wonderful cause.

I've been thinking of doing something like a game-a-thon at work for the charity we support so I think this is a great idea. 

You could probably arrange something maybe to use a dedicated server and stage a massive 24 hour Unreal-fest.

With my hours of work I won't be able to play for a full 24 hours but perhaps there is a way to split the time between a few of us and play in shifts maybe?

Too bad we can't get money for all of the time we've already put in!!!

Only thing, it's a 12 player server.

Thats cool Bain, I'll talk to Two_Fase and see if maybe we can use one of the iAM Gaming servers in addition to yours if a second server is needed. 

 

From my understanding, it's all through sponsorships and works something like this: First we (I) would need to create a team page on the ExtraLife website and then you would send people you know a link to ask them to sponsor you for 24 hours.  If the person you sent the link to decides that they do want to sponsor you, they click on the link which brings them to your team page and they provide their billing information.

 

From what I remember reading, you don't actually HAVE to be on a team (I just thought it would be a great UT3 community activity that we could all do together), you can do this as an individual if you would prefer. The money raised, does go to a charity in Texas, I believe, but and I can't stress this enough; its to help raise money for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Which could help a lot of children throughout the world, not just in the US or Texas.

 

This is a 501(c)3 recognized charity, which means that it has been verified as a legitamate charity within the state that they are in. So, your sponsors money is safe and secure. Again, it doesn't have to be a multiplayer game......and it can be anything: Handheld, PC, Mac, PS3, 360, PS2, Wii......the list goes on and on. As I stated before, the best source of information is the FAQs on the Extra Life website itself. Thank you for your interest everyone.

I'm really glad to see the community steppin up to support this great cause. I still haven't had a chance to talk to Wopr yet (sense he's the owner of this website if I'm not mistaken, I'd like to clearly it with him first to make sure he doesn't have any issues with us creating an iAM team), but I'd really like to create a giant iAM team section and see how much money we can raise as group as mentioned by Zellous. I'm sorry that I haven't posted much on this recently, but I've got my hands full 3 boys, the youngest 1 being just 3 months old. Once everything is setup and ready to roll, I'll post the details in this thread. Thanks again everyone.
