For all you ctfer's, in a game, where are you playing and why?  I think the strategy of this is a good way for folks to learn.

Since I'm relatively average, I tend to play the mid field as it lets me maximize my ability to catch escaping flag carriers, or escort returning ones.  I try to be aware of the flag at all times.  Sadly, I often don't see many folks escort the flag carrier, I usually see them run right by.  This pisses me off most when I have the flag, as its a rare thing and I need cover.

With good players in the game, you know you have to keep your eye on the tricky routes and hold the middle until you are sure they have pa**ed by.  Many folks get suckered by the delayed flag carrier escape.

It also obviously depends on the current game.  I'm bad (and SLOW) at offense, but if the game is deadlocked, and my team has good players, I know I can help on offense a bit.  I can usually get the flag and get it out of the base partially, and that's good enough for someone better to pick it up when I die.

Conversely, if you do that during a deadlock, you may be exposing your own base, so you have to feel it out a bit.  But if there are 2 /3 people in the base, wtf are you doing adding to the defense?  You can always push that line out to the middle in that case if you don't want to play O.

Sometimes I just like to run into the enemy base and cause confusion until someone better comes along and gets the flag.

So in short, I know my abilities and I know my role, I try to maximize that.  I don't need to cap the flag, I'm just as happy to drill the guy chasing the flag carrier and know that helped us win.

I usually end up running and protecting carriers, timing a bit of map control along the way.

that's one reason I don't get sick of OmicronDawn.  I enjoy standing on the bridge and seeing how long I can keep folks out.  (note this doesn't work on your fast basterds who just fly by translocating faster than i can see)

I always escort flag carriers/ orb carriers; although usually I am a carrier. On VCTF it is always a plus when you have teammates who know how to use vehicles to help make it back with the flag. On CTF, translocating is crucial for flag runners, and flag returners; you can only stop those you can aim at.
As for the noobs who ruin games for others teams, or those mysterious on timers who screw up the whole game read the following...One time there was this guy purposely grabbing orbs and running off and standing in far ends of the map and not doing anything, at that point I crushed him with a manta and took that orb back.
It is always good to let new guys try their hands at a flag run/ orb run, although when you get people who are just plain dumb and are making the team lose, don't hesitate to crush them with a vehicle like the Manta, Scorpion, Fury, Viper (very hard), Darkwalker, Scavenger (very hard) or anything you can. Sometimes you can knock them off an edge too...

i play midfield too,
attacking midfielder.  Big smile

what i do when someone else if flag running
is go on ahead or via other pa**age ways to kill whatever enemies may be lurking about.
sticking too close to the flag carrier is not the best idea, especially if they are quick on their feet as you may get in their way.

sometimes i defend, rare, but i camp every once in a while. i prefer to do this alone,
and i usually tell everyone else to attack.
or if the other team is really good, i'll ask someone else to back me up.

i flag run when there is no one else to.

c ya on the battle field

The only thing I do know in CTF is that I suck at defending for sure.. Also crap at getting the flag out of the enemy room.. I'll die trying anyway though.

I agree with that.  On big matches, or clusterf***s like reflection, I think 1 person should stay relatively close behind, because the odds are high they'll die.  plus, you can shield them with your body.  When the FC is really good, I can't shadow them anyway LOL

i try to attack but seeing how in pubs people mistake CTF for CAMP The Flag, its really hard.
so l8ly i just camp to show how EZ it is. tho if ppl like penguin, VEDA or RAMslayer
are going against me, it don't matter what i do, they win! lol

lol rican! If they camp its coz all they are lookin at is the points.

I've always joked about the points thing wiv lokedogg... doesn't mean **** really.

I think ctf is fairly popular with americans but its generally dead with EU players IMO.

About 5-10 decent EU players play it regularly. I like it but just has anyone I speak with normally playing apart from crow, collosus and greeny.

right,

it all depends on the player

i know my teammates well by now, so it is easier to back them up.

with great flag runners, just stay out of their way.
you will only hinder them,
what's bumrush sig,   do me a favor, don't do me any favors.... basically, non

of course,
communication is key!!! -foxy

have beaten some great (stacked team)
with a couple of decent players,
great communication and a little luck.

cheers

I like to mix it up, if there are flagrunners already, I play midfield or try to help them get past the few first waves of spawners. If my team is playing hard D, I will run flags; sometimes I'm in and out other times it is very hard making even a few steps off with the flag. I'll play defense when  I am going against really good players/ flag runners. When doing that my main goal is killing the flag carrier, and that's it.

I'm usually not even playing CTF or even VCTF (much anymore), but when I do, I usually am constantly changing roles.  I'd prefer to play mid-field, but I usually end up basically being either enemy flag-recon (since I don't generally kill the better flag carriers all too much) or another body thrown at protecting my team's flag carrier.

Hmm, let's see, I freelance. If I notice no one's guarding the flag, then I'll switch to defense. If 90% of my team is camping the flag, then I attempt to flag run. Mid field for me usually means i'm trying to support the flag carrier or kill the other team's flag carrier should they happen to make it out of our base. Too bad in crowded pubs there's too many point whores. The only modes points matter in is DM and Duels. Every other mode, it's what you're doing to contribute to your team winning that matters.

Defense and midfield are my specialty.  You will not get by me without at least taking a hit, even if you are translocating.

i hate playing defense at home base because i dont want to be called a camper. i hate flag running because i dont want to hear people b**** at me when i dont score it within 30secs. so i play mid-field offense... i look for enemy flag runners.. and i protect/escort our flag runner... why? because i can, and it's what im good at apparently.
