How do I get started playing vctf?  I'm decent at regular CTF.  And I played the game through, so I learned a bit about using the vehicles, but obviously the bots are retarded and the way humans will play with the vehicles is going to be 100x faster.

So if I join a vctf game as a noob, what should I do first?  Play D?  Grab some vehicle or not?  etc.

teach me.

Grab a longbow as soon as you respawn...Always stay on the move...Communicate...Dont park vehicles on flags...Dont be afraid to ask questions...Try to get familar wit all the vehicles too see what ones best suite you...Learn where all the armor & health pick-ups are...Control the power-ups on the map...Use whatever weapon you can beast wit, If it annoys someone then you're doin something right...Learn the maps even if it means you're gonna be respawning alot.  Under your UT3 settings you can organize your weapons & prioritize them...If you're gonna run flags try too go in wit Jump Boots.

I learnt how to defend to start with... learn about the vehicles and defo grab a longbow and a pair of jump boots.

When you flag run try to use rockets, flak or the alt stinger fire...

Defend with shock or stinger primary (best way to stop vehicle lifts or no longbow)

Buddy up with someone in the game, you'll need a mic to speed up your learning tbh. Adopt your natural game might b good but the maps are much bigger generally and vehicle kills are frequent if you're on foot. Still I would start off in defense with my fave weapon (not bio it doesnt spawn on vctf maps) and yes, find out where the flag room entrance, exits and avrils are. The power ups health packs, vials, ammo armour and boots are all important. You can learn a lot from observing what happens, what vehicles are capable of and flag runners consistently do. Then try to masters vehicles 1 by 1.
The most important thing is to buddy up and get familiar with the maps as DoD says. Dont b afraid to ask some questions, not too many, then fly solo against bots and try out these tricks and tips with the vehicles - self destructing, ascending, descending, flying vehicles primary/secondary fire. One more tip, if youre starting out avoid custom maps, hosted games and titan - you wont really learn and might get discouraged from playing. Good luck mate!

That depends on the map and who's on your side but essentially yes i would normally be in a viper or manta if one is available. The best way to learn a map is on foot. Defensive play on foot is fair game, its not camping unless you simply stay in one spot/flag room and wait for someone to take the flag. For my part i never bought an all action game to sit and wait for action to arrive i seek it out so I move around an area into midfield and sometimes to grab the flag. my selection usually consists of:
Rocket launcher
Stringer
Avril
Link
Flak
BTW I dont know if you realise that you can re-stock ammo by picking up a weapon you already have like the Avril. There's a limit to how much ammo you can carry but not weapons. The redeemer spawns after 2 mins and if you grab it you have to use it, u cant change the weapon priority.

so I tried VCTF the other day and hilarity ensued (where am I?  where's the flag?  what's going on?  I'm dead?) .  I need to go practice the maps off line so I can remember them.  And practice the vehicles so I know how to use them.   But there were good folks playing VCTF when no one was playing regular CTF so it seems a good thing to learn.
