This seems like a simple issue
1) What is the office program you wrote the document in
2) google office compatability patches with the extension of the word file
3) Install the patch and try opening it
4) Your mother said i should help you out on this so here i am

K ur running Windows with Microsoft Works 7 and u created a works file which should have a .wps extension NOT .doc (thats Microsoft Word). 
  • IF ur trying to open a .wps file using Microsoft Office's Word application ur wating ur time u need to DL a convertor or save the same file as .doc OR .rtf
  • IF ur trying to open a .doc in Works the same applies AND u could have saved the original as .doc in Works
  • IF u also have Office as well as Works then u have 2 text editors (plus Notepad of course) but double clicking on the file would mean the application that can read the file would open and u would see ur document. A text editor like Notepad is no good u will only see binary/unicode.
  • IF u only have Works and have created a .wps document that cant open then either u r trying to open a file that isnt the file u think it is OR its corrupted but it would still appear as unicode or simply hang while trying to open.
I would DL a convertor and see if u can read it but I think thats too simple a solution tbh. part of the problem with IT is a user's ignorance OR n0-0bness. Good luck m8! EDIT I just read ur original msg and it sounds like ur application is corrupted so u may need to re-install it. IF ur a technophobe then u wont go there. Try this link its free.

1.i think 7. and yes i did create this. its called "Microsoft Works Word Processor"
2.yes
3.i tried using the tool bar, simply clicking on it, left click and hit open. i change it to notepad and it pulled up but not like i wanted it to.

5.its saved under doc. and the name is Grand
6.i renamed it Grand69

u will get an answer u just need to be specific. As in, 
  • what version of Microsoft Word (I am presuming its Word NOT Works) did u create this .doc in?
  • Are u trying to open it in the same application (e.g. Word 2007)?
  • How are u trying to open it?
  • Where is it located?
  • How big is the file - Kb or Mb?
  • What is the full filename incl extension exactly?
  • How did u rename it?

I was serious.  Dig for the file, try renaming it with a proper MS extension and open it.  I just gave a sample file name.

right click the file and rename it.  Try "i_f_uckedthisup.doc"  I bet it opens.
