With all this time on my hands now that the PSN is down.  I thought i would look into making UT3 frag videos, when the network is back up and running.  I know that the PS3 version does not have the DEMO feature.  So how are all these awesome videos being made, is the software free?

welll for recording your footage you would need a capture card, dazzle etc but you would have to play in SD qualitry.. to record in HD quality you would need some expensive devices (4got the name of them).. thhat can cost a few 100.... and for the editing of the footage you can use simple windows movie maker if you only want a simple montage.. however for more complex montages with tons of effects you would need some expensive software such as sony vegas studio... the pro version costs around £400 i believe..... however you may find deecnt video editing software on majorgeeks.com   in the multimedia section however decent ones may be there and free but the good programs will still cost money..... this is the info ive found people posyting on this site in a few threads a while back and ive just remembered some stuff (apart from the site.. which was my own find while i was trying to find some cool/useful things to download for my new laptop)..... i havent created a montage nor do i know much about doing so... so your beter off asking people such as dragov/drokun or the others that have made montages...   in ut3 tutorials thread i think there is some info there...... good luck making your montage :) hope that some of what i said helps

It's not very free :P
Like Smatt said, first you have to consider buying a capture device (depending whether you want to play HD or not that can get right expensive..). You don't need the hottest software for editing though it helps.
Also, it can take a lot of time editing, depending on what you want :P

yeah.. the quality you want to record in depends on how much money you want to spend.... and the editing can be very flashy and have loads of effects but thats also expensive.. but as a first time montage youll want to use simple editing software and just use simple cutting.... plus to get a good montage your going to have to dedicate a month or even more of just playing and recording most matches you play to rack up the awesome kills you want to show off....

A HDPVR aka HD recording device will cost you about £140 and you will need to buy a PS3 Component cable which will cost you about £10 - 20
