Majority of the reasons you'll hear is people think it's wrong to kill poor animals.....
Animals eat eachother naturally ex. Lion eating an Antelope or something.... it's doing something natural based on instinct, so why shouldn't we?  :/   Fail argument from vegetarians is animals and humans are equal and it'd be like cannibalism.....but I don't see vegetarians yelling at Lions for eating Antelope  O:  maybe I'm aiming my argument more towards Animal Rights activists but vegetarians usually are for Animal Rights sooooo  XD  I'm all for Animal Welfare though.

If people say it's just for health then I don't have a problem with that.

It's a good thing I asked you to elaborate. ;D
Good points, especially about the veggie-argument with humans and animals being equal, I lol'd at the example :D

Anyway, what if I say humans and animals are not equal, humans are better and thus can overcome those instincts for the animals sake ? It's a free choice, but since when do we have to follow our instincts ? I don't see everyone fuc.king others on the street.

Now that last paragraph is not exactly my opinion, nor my motivation. Just interested in your reply. ;D

I came up with this because of that story from Ohio where the zoo animals that escaped were killed, and two fellow ut3 players were talking in the Reachers Corner chat about how horrible it is that they died.
I asked myself, isn't it ignorant in a way if you claim you love animals,  "cry" about them like "Ohh those poor animals got killed :(" and then eat a steak for dinner ?

BUT it's important that I'm not trying to convert anybody to not eating meat, it's not my business. I'm just interested in people's ways of thinking about the subject.

We've just refined our instincts.....and f***ing in public isn't a social norm   XD  we don't also hunt and kill for our food which is on the level of f***ing in public. They've both been refined.

A lot of things are fueled by instinct, of course we can find a substitute for virtually anything, and I'll go with that substitute if it's EXACTLY like meat, but as far as I know nothing is exactly like meat  XD Maybe in the future?

Having sympathy for animals being killed for no reason (other than safety, although I think they could've captured them without killing) isn't exactly the same as being vegetarian....lol Cows/Pigs/Chickens are killed for a reason......... and are (usually) killed humanely.

Also, different animals have different affects on humans I suppose?
Livestock are generally used for our benefit so it'd be the same as crying over a tree getting cut down   :/

And theres also that huge over-population thing that would happen.....and the world is only so big  XD

Tell me for what reason. Humans choosing to eat meat because it tastes good, even though they don't need it at all and they have plenty of other things that taste great ?
It's unnessesary luxury at the cost of causing suffering. Or do you think they life a good life and have an easy, painless death ? ;D

Except a tree doesn't have feelings such as pain, it has no concious during it's "life".

Anyone who says that as a reason for him eating meat is a straight up liar, you know that. ;D
It has some truth to it, but do you honestly think humans and our nature wouldn't overcome this problem ?

"There'd be a over-population of cats if you don't eat them or kill them", does that make sense ? No, because we found a legit solution for it without having to kill them.

Again I'm just interested in the replies. :P

We don't need meat? Doesn't it have like protein or whatever? and don't vegetarians take pills to fill this? idk even if it doesn't, it fuels us so I can say why not? You say to prevent suffering and I can say it's not at our expense? Even though it does sound kind of bad, but we are able to kill and cause suffering because we are above animals and we just don't care...yeah it sounds bad but it's the truth   ;P

I wasn't stating that tree idea as in regards to what the tree/animal feels, more as in how society looks at it. We view them as just necessities to us. Dogs for example aren't on the level of trees or cows.

LOL, yes no one really thinks about it, and also we actually force breed a lot for our own needs and have over-populated them ourselves, but this outlook is inevitable. The world is going to continue to kill animals, so why not eat them anyway? That also sounds bad but it's truth.

Again cat's aren't on the level of necessity-type animals. We could find a way around it, but only some view our current way wrong, and I'm sure people would find something wrong with our next method. Not everyone can be happy, and it all comes down to one's view. I don't especially agree with vegetarianism, but I won't try to force someone out of it   O:

Haha, no, vegetarians don't need to take pills or anything, what you get from meat you will get plenty enough from other things. If you want to become a vegan you need to see your doctor first, he'd tell you what 'pills' you'd have to get. You've mistaken that one I think. ;D
And yes you provided a good view from society on the whole topic, also here and
here.

Why not eat them anyway ? Me personally, yes I know the world is going to continue to kill animals to eat them, I just don't want to be a part of it. I'm not the kind of person to say "well everyone does it, it wouldn't make a difference if I'd stop so I'll just continue to eat meat." I thought it's better to not lie to yourself, be honest with yourself and live up to it. imo it's ignorant to just blend the suffering that you cause out, simply for yourself when it's not nesessary.

I'm also far from being the guy who tries to convince everybody to be a vegetarian, nor do I tell my family and friends when they eat meat around me that it's disgusting or wrong or whatever.
It's everybody's own business

Well, i've been a vegetarian (vegan& afterwards lacto-veg) for almost 20 years and I have throughly studied it from the points of nutrition, ethics and even scratched the surface what the big world religions say about it. So i'm not just speaking trough a mere feeling.

Nutrition: for example soy includes all nine essential amino acids and when other vegetable proteins are combined, you'll get more aminos you need without any animal protein.
B-12 vitamin though is harder to get from vegetarian foods, so that may be taken as a substitute, that's though not derived from anima sources. I myself use some dairy (organic if possible), so no substitutes  are needed. So one can live as a vegetarian. For example in India, a large percentage of people have lived thousands of years in harmony with the cow - and invented the specifig lacto-vegetarian cuisine that also we westerners are nowadays familiar with. Grains, fruits, lentils&beans, vegetables and some milk products combined is giving us all nutrition we need and a huge scale of spicy flavours as a bonus. And you can also do that as a vegan when milk is replaced with soy!

I'm not even starting here on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_vegetarianism" rel="nofollow - environmental benefits of vegetarianism .

Ethics: as we know, animals and especially mammals can experience pain. You can take a needle and stick it on your eyeball to feel a fracture of the pain an animal gets troughout it's  life. Remember that generations and generations of animals are doomed to take birth, separated and prematurely killed for food - even if there is a non-violent substitutes available. Does anybody really think that if meat eating is natural for humans, the factory-like conditions we keep animals is somewhat natural?

What justifies one to kill even an insect? The fact that one is bigger than an insect?
I think human has evolved a bit from caveman times, huh?

Regligion: as non christian, I should only just briefly quote Romans 14:21:"It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall." Of course that's not all the bible says about nutrition, but I have met many christians who are vegetarians and happy about it. What I do have some experience about, are some eastern religions and philosophies. They usually share the idea of reincarnation and they suggest that we have reincarnated innumerous times - so we have been every beings mothers and vice versa. So in this light we wouldn't eat our mothers, would we? Also karma, the concept of action and reaction is something we could adapt not in religious, but in common sense way. We have seen some consequenses in form of mad cows disease for example. The very essence is love and non-violence: If you inflict pain, you'll get some pain back. You give love you'll recieve love and if you recieve pain, you'll just give love back. Turning the other cheek is universally smart thing to do Smile

Even if one doesn't believe in any religions,  one may logically understand, that human can't survive without living in harmony with the earth and everything  lives on it. Putting living, feeling animals in cramped buildings filled with life long agony,  is far from harmony - those animals flesh is produced then to a variety of unhealthy products filled with hormones and additives - and they ARE killing people in form of cancers, obesity and diabetes, just to name a few (re-check the section: karma).

...................................................

The writing above is not an attempt to turn carnivores to vegetarians, just personal thoughts and reply for Dagon's topic, so please don't take it as an offense. One's own example of a happy, content & non-violent lifestyle is the best teacher. Compassion for suffering beings rises from oneself, it cannot be stuffed down one's throat.

P.S if one has a strong taste for blood, one can do that virtually by playing violent video games like UT3 or  COD etc.  LOLYing Yang

If I can say my opinion over the animals that were killed. I'm no animal activist nor vegetarian/vegan but I think those that were involved with the shootings were a little gun happy, who wouldn't be if you were told to go shoot some lions without having to go on a Safari, they should of attempted more tranquilizer captures.

I was listening to someone on the radio say they were grateful they killed these dangerous animals because if they would of attempted to use tranquilizers and missed, the animal would become angry and go on the attack.. but wouldn't you get the same result if you missed with a rifle?

All of these animals were probably scared ****less and would only attack if they deemed threatened, the authorities apparently thought that since these animals got loose that they would go mapquest the nearest school and have a chow fest, you kidding me? Exotic and wild animals should be illegal!! They should only be viewed in a state/county zoo or in the wild, not in someones backyard.

Well said, I am vegetarian whenever in so doing will decrease the pull of meat from industry. The externalizing of the quality of life of the animal to achieve the lowest cost meat leads to lives of misery. If I knew meat products came from pastures, instead of concentrated animal feed operations, I would be more inclined to eat meat.

lol don't you have a farmers market or know someone who farms? You can get meat, eggs, milk and any other source of food that is 100% natural, came from pastures, no chemicals or inhumane killing. Well.. Minnesota has this, I don't know about the other states.

dude it part of our natural diet to eat both meat and vegi's, its that simple n there should be no ethics even mentioned about it.  if someone wants to cry about animals being eating and not eat meat they should be slap'd and keep there thoughts to themselfs.  im all about pro choices just not about being force feed someones else's thoughts or views.  no different than i have no problem with people being gay just dont want it being thrown in my face.  people think that just cause they have a opinion that everyone else should hear it or that other people should think or believe it as well.  ill tell you right now i gotta alot of opinions but i dont expect anyone to agree nor care if people do or dont like them.  wait was that alot of me expressing my opinion.... lol sorry

Well, dear DEATH, please let me comment, although your post might be a troll  Smile

Humans teeth and digestion system is neither  meat eater's nor it's vegetarian's.  We are omnivorous, which means we can derive nutrition from almost everything that grows or walks on earth. Please google what "a natural diet" includes for some tribes in Papua, even nowadays.

Those who are  lucky ones, in addition, have the luxury of choosing what to eat. In this phase the ethics pops in to the picture: some of us are implementing the ethics to some parts of our conduct, for example to our diets. Some of us don't, and about that you all can learn more in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeJfY5CXTM0" rel="nofollow - Dagon's great video there.

Compared to animals, humans have a large cerebral cortex which allows (some of) us to feel certain strong feelings like compassion. Compassion combined with rational thinking can lead us to harmony with everything around us. Lack of compassion combined with ignorance leads us to wars  and neglection of natural resources, both flora and fauna.

if someone wants to cry about animals being eating and not eat meat they should be slap'd and keep there thoughts to themselfs.
check the sentences about large cerebral cortex & compassion above.

Well, if you didn't notice, your writing takes place in topic called "Vegetarians" that's purpose is to ask how many vegetarians are in this forum. I don't know if you are answering to that question or are you force feeding your thoughts or views to us vegetarians? LOL

Well, this was just some forum chit-chat and not meant to offend anybody's feelings or views.
And certainly this was not force feeding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-f3krkSpZg" rel="nofollow - This is force feeding.

Happy Christmas for all vegetarians and non-vegetarians Hug

Definately never meant any "force feeding" here.
I think it's important to educate everyone on this topic. This is important because if you don't know the impact of eating meat, how can you make a fair choice ?
It IS everyone's choice, and it can't be stuffed down one's throat, but only if the person is educated well enough to know what happens in mass production of meat.. at what cost you would eat meat.
That's why you should just watch that video.

Ya, I try to go to the farmer's market, but the supermarket is generally more convenient.
