the 1000+ players include the PC/MMO players. from what i've heard, the DUST514/PS3/FPS action will be on the planets. the EVE/PC/MMO action will be in space. supposedly you'll be able to call in strikes from a PC player who has a ship orbiting the planet that you're on among other things.

not sure if yous know or have heard this yet but this is launching F2P. they are banking on the micro transactions to take over in place of charging to buy the game. hopefully EVE is a glimpse of what this game could be. EVE has been running 9 years on PC and is still rocking i believe 100,000 players. i could be wrong on that number tho. only thing that worries me is console gamers a bit dif then PC players. console gamers dont really stick to one game that long. some but not as many as u would need to keep a game like Dust going.

i know alot of people from MAG are going to play. but yeah you're right, it's going to need a good sized player base. it's going to be real interesting to see how this all works out. i heard that you have to pay to respawn. that's going to cost me millions, lol.

yea they havent exactly said how the ISK (in game currency) will work for each individual battle. almost everything will cost something. ammo will not cost anything which is good. they havent said how a battle is won or lost but i think there are 2 ways. one being that a team runs out of ISK and the other being that a team completes a certain objective. i have to think that there would be some kinda cap for how much ISK can be used for a match, cause it would be crazy to have these big corps with a massive amount of ISK goin against a corp just starting out or a smaller corp. there will be some type of balance in place. if they dont the game could die out really quickly from not getting new people to play cause they would just get killed all day long by corps with more money.

and yea i heard of the MAG super corp. well see if they all stick together when the game drops. having that many people in a corp can result into pissed off people and the last thing u want in this game is pissed off people with access to all ur corp stuff. cause they could easily steal all ur ****. basically each corp has their own supply depot that they store weapons and what not in and anyone with access can take what they want when they want. so the corps have to be careful who they give that access to. you will have a lot of people goin covert into other corps just to steal their supplies. so super corps have to be careful the way they go about this.

E3 2012: The Last of Us, Beyond and GoW Ascension are great, but Dust 514 is something else

We've seriously underestimated Dust 514. At E3 today we've spent the day at presentations and getting hands-on with all of Sony's first-party titles, including The Last Of Us, God Of War: Ascension and Beyond: Two Souls. But although those three titles do look incredible, our heads are still rattling after seeing the potential of CCP Games' MMO.

Dust 514 is the most ambitious project that the PlayStation franchise has ever seen. Taking place in the unfathombly massive Eve Online Universe, players of PS3's Dust 514 and PC's Eve Online will do battle online against each other, but will also be able to team up together in squads. It's a concept that only the open architecture of the PS3 could possibly handle, but if this really works,it could be amazing.

The persistance online world will be rich with PvE and PvP, including anything from deathwatch battles to the in-depth Conquest mode, where one skilled player will Lord over this army using real-time strategy to command the battlefield in a huge spacecraft hovering over his troops.

Though we've only seen a sample of just how huge and potentially epic these battles could be at this point, Dust 514 has a real chance to capture the souls of core PlayStation gamers like no other multiplayer game with the same addictive qualities that have made Eve Online so popular.

Players continuously grow in the game, choosing to specialise in certain areas, earning in-game currency to spend on a huge range of stuff from augmentation and weapons to armour to vehicles. Players can trade items in a real-time auction house and customise their characters to an incredible amount of depth. A quick look at the inventory system and myriad of menus is at first daunting, but anyone familiar with MMOs will lick their lips to see this sort of depth and scale on console.

Yep, Sony has shown some great games at E3 this year, but none has the potential that Dust 514 has. This is a game that CCP has built to last for many years; and a quick look at a constellation map showing dozens of stars all representing different places to do battle is just the tip of the iceberg, we're told. Mark our word, Dust 514 is about to make a big impression.

Dust 514 Preview (PS3)
06/06/2012 Written by Jonathan Leack

So here I was sitting in front of CCP Games, the team responsible for one of the most unique MMORPGs of our time, EVE Online. But I wasn’t there to see the nine-year old EVE Online, I was there to see Dust 514. The thought of being in the presence of something as ambitious as an FPS tie-in for EVE Online was a bit intimidating at first, but after spending a few minutes playing it dawned on me that it is exactly as advertised, an FPS extension of EVE Online.

Dust 514 takes some of the best qualities of EVE Online and introduces them to the first-person genre. The one that was most exciting for me was the character area, which is where skill points are allocated. These skills and where I chose to allocate them had a significant impact on my abilities in-combat, and even played in part in allowing me to equip higher-tier armor, weapons, and equipment. The developers notified me that there are enough skills in the game that it would take years to max them all out, and even if that were to occur, additional skills would lengthen that time. In other words, you’ll never feel like your character is complete and that you’ve necessarily beaten the game

Similarly, the fitting area is a place where tons of time can be invested. Dropsuits are the name of the armor worn in Dust 514, and during my time with the game I was able to create several presets equipped with a variety of weapon and armor types. Merely calling these loadouts doesn’t do them justice as they allow for an extremely deep level of personalization. Suiting up a few dropsuits with the best equipment you can afford will go a long way to making you a ferocious opponent. I had the most luck with an anti-infantry preset equipped with a grenade launcher. Blowing up enemies left and right was satisfying, although the damage feedback could use a little work.

Playing Dust 514 can only be compared to the likes of games such as MAG and Battlefield 3 where the maps are large and objectives are critical. Teamwork is a necessity, and every time I veered away from my group of teammates I stood no chance. Calling in a vehicle mid-combat and seeing an aircraft fly it to me was quite the sight. While the visuals came across as a bit rough around the edges, the stable framerates and large scale gave it some flavor.

Sense of scale is deeply rooted in Dust 514. The moment you open the star map its hundreds of star systems are awe-inspiring. I’m skeptical as to how the full mass of EVE Online’s world will be taken advantage of, and chances are it won’t, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see dozens of planets where combat can take place. Speaking of which, the developer shared interest in creating maps and planets that suffer from extreme weather such as icy cold and lava. However, we won’t be seeing any of that until what is currently in-development is squared away.

The best thing I can say about Dust 514 is that it has a lot of the qualities that made EVE Online so fun to play. For the people who just like to jump into combat and start blowing away enemies this game might come off as way too unorthodox to get into. However, those who like to spend time fine-tuning their character, trying out new builds, and always earning something new—qualities not typically associated with FPS games—this is a game that will be very rewarding.

Dust 514 is coming very soon and a closed beta is currently ongoing. Stay tuned for more on this unique first-person shooter.

CCP explains Dust 514 updating, Sony certification and not disturbing Eve
By Robert Purchese Published 6 June, 2012

The perils of sharing one giant server.

PS3 shooter MMO Dust 514 has unprecedented freedom on PSN to be updated by developer CCP. This is crucial for an MMO.

But, Eurogamer learned today at E3, some Dust 514 updates will still have to go through Sony certification. So, how exactly will CCP go about updating Dust 514?

"Sony are being incredibly helpful. They're really bending over backwards to help us. They really recognise the uniqueness of this opportunity," began Eve Online senior producer Jon Lander, talking to Eurogamer today.

"There are many different ways we can go about [updating Dust 514]. We can change the data in the database on the fly, so we can actually create new items just by logging, 'OK, we need 24 new assault rifles by [X] with these price points, with these abilities and with these stats.' We can just do that because we built the ability for that data to change on the fly.

"We can also change the back-end server because that lives within CCP. It's the Eve back-end, we have to have control over it, because we need to change it for Eve, we'll need to change it for Dust. So we can change those things.

"We've actually built a lot of technology over the last 18 months to enable us to have this layer between Dust and the server," he added, "so we can change the server without affecting the client. We've still got to be very careful.

"But if we want to do major client updates to the PS3, then we go through Sony's usual submission process. But we do have ways of just being able to change other parts of the infrastructure as we need to."

Morgan Godat, vice president of art at CCP, and "mister Dust", explained further about what constitutes a major Dust 514 client update - the type that will need to go through Sony certification.

"Any major content update to the game would be a big - it would have a name," he said. "We'll start naming the expansions or whatever you want to call them as they go. I'm not sure if it's actually going to be called an expansion yet, or if it's a content update, but like John said, we have a couple of different ways of updating the game and changing it without the player doing anything, just from a database - they won't even see it.

"They'll start the game as regular and maybe there'll be new guns on the market with new colours applied to them. Big content patches are actually something that we're trying to break down into small packages, so that with a few smaller updates we might be able to go back and change old content and change level layouts and add new models to the game."

Dust 514 and nine-year-old space MMO Eve Online will share the same giant server, Tranquility. This is one of Dust 514's big boasting points. But could their connection be a double-edged sword - could Sony certification complicate Eve Online's patching and update process?

"Not for an Eve update," stressed Lander. "We can actually change the back-end server."

The plan is to launch Dust 514 this year, CCP told us, but the trigger won't be pulled until the team is confident the game is ready. Or so we're told. The game's currently in closed beta, and public will be invited in for the first time later this month, on 29th June.

Dust 514 will be free to download from PSN and be free to play. CCP will make money through micro-transactions.
