Looking to get a new tablet for myself. Unfortunately it is mostly going to be used for work related stuff on the go, however i need flash so that rules out the iPad. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance to those who leave a reply with any insight. My budget is very flexible so I am looking for functionality and ease of use as the two major selling points. Also powerpoint and word (or programs like it are a must)

The Asus Transformer Tab looks pretty cool.
I own the playbook and I like it alot, I use word on the go A LOT. Blackberry's like always are good for business and security but apps are lackiing. I heard though, with the Playbook 2.0 release I'll soon be able to get some androdid apps.
But long story short, Asus Transfromer is very cool and the latest Xoom. Android ya can't lose with the apps.
Personally I'd stray away from the windows tablets because I've read nothing about bad reviews.
You ruled out Ipad so automaticaly look for the best android.

Although it looks very nice does it have great email functionality? My cousin told me the playbook sucked for email apparently =(. And mega_hott just pm'd me saying samsung tablets are very nice as well. Anyone here second that?

Samsung is killing the game.
And I was by no means recommending the playbook haha unless the new CEO goes HAM.

Agreed. I don't know why people waste so much money and something with limited functionality, when you can by a computer (notebook) for the same price with full functionality.
Yangin, buy alcohol instead. It's a better investment.

I didn't have a personal laptop or desktop for a year. Just used the ones at school from time to time, when a tablet can't cut the job.
For me, the biggest selling point is battery life. As far as use goes (from high to low frequency): 5% email, 80% browser, 10% news apps, 5% other apps.
The Sony one looks real cool.

The iPad is a great tool but only if you want to surf the net, watch & listen to paid for content and play games. The display is sweet. Its got the best apps going, good support and security too. Me? Id go for the Samsung galaxy 10.1 tab as it does all you've named. The tab comes with Polaris pre-loaded so you can create and open MS docs flawlessly. There aren't too many apps for honeycomb atm but Im sure that will soon change. Its a faster m/c, better connectivity (HDMI needs to be powered), works with bluetooth touchpad devices, presently supports flash and java, outputs to USB via adapter. If u like retro games then its got SNES and SEGA emulators for running them. Also if you have a samsung smart TV then your tab doubles as a wireless TV remote/monitor/portable TV - you can even stream games from your TV to the tab. Don't go for the Sony, Blackberry or Nokia and yes agreed, stay clear of windows based tabs. The xoom is interesting but is not on the same level as the galaxy imo. The one I would look at is the Asus Ee pad Transformer 2 - possibly better than the galaxy but I cant say. BTW I have an iPad, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Asus laptop so maybe im either just biased or I have good judgement - good luck!

To answer the question why a tab? Then its simple. A tab gives us portability, screen real estate and a customisable level of personal functionality. In short its an ubiquitous device that has no extensions for input other than our fingers. So it becomes simple to roll out and its clutter free. The Asus T2 has a reported 14.5 hour battery life although its more of a hybrid like the Dell Duo- now compare that to a similar spec laptop running a dual core and you start to appreciate the why tabs argument. Its what people desire and soon processor speed and smart TV technology will mean PCs will disappear in the home at least.

Well how many laptops have bags with shoulder straps? Do tabs have the same? Theyre lighter, no pad, no keyboard, no battery pack, no drives = more portable. Price isn't the issue for peeps who prefer tabs its a lifestyle choice. Yes laptops are more capable but its more about desirability. Tabs are more for casual and social usage and they're cooler - touch screens rather than kbm input. In terms of capability its the same as the desktop vs laptop argument. Most laptops were as expensive as PCs then but now you have lots of budget-mid range laptops to choose from. Of course the choice is to have both or all if possible.

I think I narrowed it down to the Asus Transformer and Samsung tablets. Just have to go to bestbuy now or amazon get some questions answered about android apps. Thank you all for your help , now I just have to make that decision between the two companies.

I just bought a budget tablet of 100 dollar and successfully flashed it to Android 4.0 IceCream Sandwitch. It is amazing and has full 1080p playback, and andriod 4.0 is sweet.
Name: Qware 7" Pro3 (netherlands only, similar to the Ployer Momo9 in the US) Cpu: Cortex A8 1,2GHZ + Mali-400 GPU. Ram: 512MB DDR3 Rom: 4GB + 32GB TFCard. Screen: 7" 16:9 Capacative Multitouch. OS: Android 4.0.1 (android 2.3 stock). Others: USB, Mini USB, HDMI, 2.0mp Front camera, 3G function (by optional dongle)
Seeing its price, this is pretty good and saved me alot of money. And Ying, goodluck with your purchase!

i think your getting a little far with your point, i agree its just about choice but i dont believe they are worth buying or having at all. there a great TOY if someone doesnt mind spending the cash on it but still think overall a waist of money and that was the only point i was trying to make to yinyang. even a mini laptop would be more worth it imo.

1) long battery life 2) i already have a laptop
3) it fits in my briefcase and armrest in my car easily without having a power supply to fit alongside it 4) this is for work, i do not need a powerful processor, just decent video when i want to relax on my flights i take to new york 5) honeycomb may not have the best apps, but it has what i need in office like apps (polaris) 6) My new asus has a docking station with a keyboard so typing long emails is still a breeze (when connected it looks like a mini ultrabook and the keyboard adds MORE battery life) 7) I like touchscreen interfaces LOL

C'mon man I was only responding 2 ur question on portability so u gave me lots of scope to go 'far' with. I understand what u were saying and u were only offering ur opinion like me. But if we all stop to think if spending $ or £ on stuff was actually worth it or useful then thats a different matter to 'which one is best'. For me. im a tight b4stard, it goes with my culture lol, so nothing's truly worth the money. IMO my money pays not just for a product but for every fker who hijacks the chain. But in terms of convenience, pleasure, experience, reward then some things are worth more than just money! Soon the gap between tablets and laptops will be bridged then maybe tablets will be as capable and more attractive to the public. I personally think 2012 will be the year of the tablet but who actually knows eh! We base our opinions on our values and I admit atm i'm slightly biased towards tablets!

k so i've had just over a week with a few different tablet devices. Here's the rundown so far in case anyone is thinking of buying: iPad 2 - great device, super display, stable, good output to a large screen (although its 720p its still quality). lots of apps. Downside is that its wireless if you have apple TV, everything goes through iTunes so its quite expensive to get content (films, music etc), no extendable hard drive storage. Asus eeTransformer - fast, Kbd docking with mousepad, USB, Micro HDMI, excellent performance, battery saving/usage is the best bar none, great display, Android Honeycombe is impressive. Downside feels like a laptop, not the prime so no quad core. Also they have a new hybrid called the padphone coming out at the end of March I think. Sony - fast, great display, its a Sony so its interconnected (SD, USB, Micro HDMI), easy connection to PS via DNLA (not fully tested and not tried throwing media to a smart tv yet). Downside - feels cheap, design, cant get it to connect to Samsung tv! Motorolla Xoom - Performs pretty well but damn the on button took me ages to find. Protective skin is very usefulNeed more time with this one Toshiba - cant remember the series but its got the most connections, great display, not tested with the apps or internet as yet. Seems a little bulky though. I can only add that the android machines offer more in terms of functionality. They connect wirelessly to a smart tv, mirror tabs to screen is easy, you can use it as a remote for your TV or as an additional monitor and the content is not limited so you can upload your own movies and music . Also it can be extended to increase the hard drive and output at 1080p. The apps for Android are not as stable but they're normally very reliable, very good and a little cheaper than apple. Open source may be a security issue but Ive not found this and ive had a Galaxy S2 phone for nearly a year now. Will post again once ive got some info to update. Didn't get the Galaxy, Playbook or HTC Flyer
