can u honestly tell me what the appeal of this was?
not trying to be a d1ck but I hated the first one.

The graphics were awkward, the storyline was the video game version of ambien and half way through it I had to smoke 2 kilos of crack to stay awake.

Yet its like a cult classic to some and a ton of hype on part 2

please educate me.

Lol, well let me see as far as the graphics go, yeah they def don't compare to say UT3, Gears, MW2 but they were good enough I thought...and they do look better at least in the commercials I've seen.

I like the futuristic setting too as opposed to the more realistic games that are so popular right now, such as MW2....and of course it's an RPG which are always fun, you get to wander around and explore, do different side missions, etc.  One of the things that was a little tedious in the first Mass Effect was having to wander around every single planet in the different galaxies and search for things to mine but supposedly you are able to scan the planets from your space ship first to see if there is anything interesting down there.

I guess, like you said, you either like the story or you don't....but from what I've read they've improved many things on this version that might have been a little lacking in the first and not just the story but weapons, how you interact with the members of your team, etc.  Of course you know you can "transfer" your character from the first Mass Effect to this one but the guy at Game Stop said you had to have been at least level 50, so I don't know.

I just picked it up so I'll know more once I actually play it !

Here is one review of the game:

The first game is one of the greatest games I've ever played. I picked up the 2nd one this morning and will porting over one of my 7 characters from the first one to play. I played the first one for hundreds of hours. I thought the graphics were incredible, the scenes using the games engine where you get to pick what you say look like scenes from a movie. I also liked being able to kill off main characters or saving them. I have over 80 games on the 360 and mass effect is my favorite, even better then the halo games.

If you used biotics in the game, you could make your enemies float off into space or shoot them while they floated around. I played through using different specs and the game was awesome everytime. I loved the whole story line. I killed off the council in one play through then saved them the next. I had no complaints about anything in the first game.

Will be playing MAG hardcore for awhile and won't be playing this one just yet, but I already have it.

Yeah, I'm debating whether to replay Mass Effect 1 so I can do a transfer... It's been a while since I played it and they say there are lots of references to things in the first one, plus the story will actually be a little different if you transfer your character and it's supposed to be worth doing, instead of starting fresh.

My problem though is that we sold back the first one to Game Stop after we finished and they don't have a single used copy left.  The Game Stop people said that alot of people were coming in and buying up the used copies of the first Mass Effect to prepare for part 2 Cry.

I just remembered something about the graphics, you need to go into the options and turn off the grainy effect. That makes the graphics clear instead of like an old movie that they were trying to achieve. I never like grainy graphics just to try and make the game different.

Playing thru part one for the first time now.  It's a little slow (played for about an hr and a half last nite and shot about 5 people..lol) but the storyline is engaging and I'm impressed with the graphics.  I'm sorry I overlooked this one before

these games carry to much dialogue, the action is always unsatisfying.. pretty much done with bioware.. they had a good run with the baldurs gates games.. but even the neverwinter nights games i didnt like.. and kotor, and mass effect to me are just snoozers.

i do have dragon age origins.. which did get me wrapped in for about a day or so.. but the combat is so weak in these games i cant stick with them... they need to balance the story and diagolue with the combat.. an example of how to mix the 2 good is oblivion.

and as far as mass effect hype... every 360 exclusive is over hyped..

Most games are hype these days.  Hell, if Call of Duty 4 was announced a month or two before it came out, I guarantee if wouldn't even be as close to as many copies it originally sold.

Just finished playing Mass Effect 2 and have to say I loved it!  Finished it at approx. 70 hrs of playtime but there is still stuff I haven't even done...I haven't downloaded the extra content yet (the code to download it came in the box).  At one of the markets on Ilium (I think) you can purchase star charts to visit new galaxies, and I still haven't done that either.

I'm going to play it again on a harder level with a different specialty and this time I plan to make all "renegade" choices and see how the story differs.  It's true there is a lot of dialogue but it is done so well, you almost feel like you are participating in a movie.  The story is far superior to the first one, the missions you do when assembling your team are all different.  The level of detail in every aspect of the game is amazing.  The histories of every planet, alien species, alien cultures and their governments, are gone into with some detail.  It is not a game to just rush through.

It's hard to compare a game like Oblivian, which I loved by the way, with this one.  You have to be prepared to get into the whole story of Mass Effect 2 to enjoy it properly.  If your primary focus is just on shooting things then I can see why you would be less than thrilled.  The Mass Effect series achieves what many other games fail to do:  they make you really care about what happens to each of the characters.

Counting down to the release of the third and final installment!Thumbs Up

PS.  I almost forgot, to all of you Gears fans the lady who does the voice of the doctor on the Normandy is the same lady who voices the Locust Queen on Gears 2!

Just started playing, turned off the grain filter right at the start to make the graphics better. Have to say the game is really good so far.

Yea i got this for the PC and the graphics are dope. i dont know if the xbox version is downgraded in graphics or not but i wold assume so. Either way i am 20 hrs in and it hasn't gotten old. The duologue is not that  lengthy at all. at least not compared to dragon age. that game was BORING. i never played the first one but the action in this game can get intense and very strategic at some times. overall it is a great game..... on the PC.

Lol guess that means she was your "romantic" interest....Damn, you beat it that fast on insanity?!!  You know you get an achievement for playing it through twice.... AND you have the option to do your second game with your character from the first.  You keep all of your points if you do it this way.

Ah okay,  I started this game with a new character...just started my second run-thru last night.  The first time was on normal setting and now I'm trying to do it on insanity.

I'm only at the part where Shepard gets off that medical ship in the beginning of the game but I DID notice something different already in the story.  Just small things really but the first time I don't think I met or talked to Wilson (the traitor), this time Shepard does; also, the first time I played it, Miranda kills Wilson before she gets to us, this second time she kills him in front of us.

I'm curious to know how many achievements you managed to get when you finished the game that fast...I only had 38 out of the 51.

If you play a RPG really fast, you'll stay a very low level, I've played over 13 hours now and I'm level 16. If you beat the game in 13 hours you wouldn't be anywhere near level 52, in fact the maximum level in this game is level 30. So untill you really start playing, quit lying to everyone. Since your lying here, I'm sure you lie in every post you make.

I'm getting off-topic here but just started Dragon Age Origins and it makes me like Bioware even more.  It sort of reminds me of a cross between Oblivion and the Final Fantasies....there IS alot of reading and dialogue in these two Bioware games (Dragon Age and Mass Effect) but it makes for a much more engaging story imo.
