While it accepts disks, it does not show up on the crossbar. Sould I attempt to replace some component or purchase a used console. How much does either run?

try searching youtube to see what it would take to replace the blueray drive assuming that's the problem.

That's my initial thought aswell... Should I buy a broken used one and cannibalize it?

Yes and no.  Usually someone selling a broken one doesn't know what part is broken.  You could end up buying the same problem.

I suspect a ton of used PS3 units will be hitting ebay any moment.

I had this problem. Opened it myself and cleaned the lens. Works like a baby again. Just don't use any liquid!!! Wipe it with DRY ear stick.

Just turned my PS3 on last night, and.....no discs are being detected.  CD's, DVD's, or BluRays.  Sum b****.  It is a old 40 gig from christmas 2007, but I think I'll try replacing the blu ray drive before I go out and buy a new  one.  40 gigs are pretty much full so a bigger hard drive would be nice.  Thats what I get for not playing for a week. Grrrrrr.

just get a 320GB and be done with it. it's really nice having over 200GB of free space after you re-install everything.

Maybe just blow in it then take a q-tip and clean it with alcohol.... hey it worked for nintendo games.

I got it working again last night.
The Bluray drive's motor failed, and it was a real easy fix by swapping it out with the extra one I already had here at work.  Luckily we had an old broken PS3 a customer just gave to us (broken power supply).  Well I say easy, I must have taken it apart  and reassembled it 6 times before it finally worked.  You have to keep your original control circuit board and remount it on the new bluray drive, else it doesnt work as I learned late last night.  I'll probably just get a bigger hard drive to install in it.
